Moundsville WWTP employees designed and built algae scrubbers for the cleaning of the secondary clarifier's weirs, baffles and effluent troughs. Cleaning algae from the secondary clarifiers was a weekly occurrence. The job required 4 operators a total of 2 hrs. per week for approximately 35 weeks a year to keep the clarifiers clean from algae. This totals 280 man-hours per year dedicated to keep the algae under control in the secondary clarifiers. Since the installation of the scrubbers, it has not been necessary for the operators to clean the clarifier's weirs, baffles and troughs. The material cost for the scrubbers were under $200.00 per tank. This allows the operators more time to address operations, maintenance and up keep at the plant.
